The Need
When we stop and think about the state of our planet or the state of our society, it’s hard to feel optimistic, it’s easy to want to pretend that it’s really all right, or that maybe someone else will fix it for us. Basically, it’s hard to face up to it.
If you are brave enough to explore the four pages in this section of the website, then you’re probably one of the people who are prepared to face up to the challenges that face humanity in the 21st century. Our belief is that only by allowing ourselves to feel the pain that exists on planet Earth will we develop, over time, the resolve to willingly embrace the challenges ahead and create the kind of society that is deeply desired in the human psyche.
Condition of the Planet briefly outlines five of the major environmental problems facing us today. Each one on its own is huge and growing larger.
State of the People briefly outlines 5 of the major problems that are undeniable in human society. In reality, they are symptoms of deeper problems, indicators that something fundamental needs to be addressed.
NZ Youth Statistics zeroes in on tomorrow’s adults in New Zealand. Interestingly though, statistics from most western countries show remarkably little variation. When we read this heartbreaking section, we begin to get closer to the cause of our environmental and societal problems.
In the News brings the statistics alive, as reported in recent newspapers articles. It doesn’t make enjoyable reading, but none of the above pages do.
It is healthy to feel anger or despair upon reading this section. It challenges us to respond, maybe by denying it or by feeling helpless and leaving it up to others, or hopefully, by resolving to do what each of us realistically can, for the benefit of our children and their children.
If you do want to be a part of the solution, we invite you to go to “The Way Forward” to see why we’re convinced that education which raises the consciousness of its students holds a master key to our future.
