Sustainability Rules In Unique School Building
"The brief for Seven Oaks calls for the design of a unique school for unique individuals". So reads the opening line in the concept design report prepared by architect Ross Maguire for the Holistic Education Trust. "Seven Oaks recognises that each child is born brilliant and is dedicated to growing that brilliance rather than dimming it down", says Board Chairperson Bruce McIntyre.
The design brief called for a natural, child friendly school that is friendly to people and to the environment. "The environment has a big effect on the well-being and growth of students", says McIntyre, "It is just as important as our curriculum in growing the brilliance of our students". The school will have a park-like feel with hundreds of trees and a natural spring on site.
Classrooms will be roomy, warm and comfortable, built with eco-friendly, non-toxic materials. Floors will be wooden, light will be natural. All buildings will be designed to withstand ongoing earth movements and extreme weather events that are expected to continue for many more years.
Seven Oaks is currently open to primary school children in Opawa. When it moves to Halswell in 2014, a high school is planned so Seven Oaks students can remain at the school until graduation.
